SHIFTING COLORS is a series of handwoven panels in monumental waffle weaves, where subtle shifts in color and structure create smooth color transitions. The series transcends the small, repetitive patterns inherent to the shaft mechanism of dobby weaving by integrating digital tools into the design process. Using software, parameters such as warp set-up and color sequence, which are typically standardized in industrial production, are explored and recalculated to fully exploit the greater flexibility offered by the handloom. Experimenting with these parameters led to deliberate misplacements between the repetition of the color rhythm and the 3D structure. As a result, these elements interact in new ways, generating larger patterns where colors appear and disappear across the surface in dynamic gradients. An investigation into materiality and scale led to a structure in 100% flax, where yarn and density were calibrated to balance refinement and three-dimensionality, while remaining feasible for manual production. The double-sided panels are made to measure and serve as acoustic room dividers or wall hangings, offering a reversed color effect on the backside.
